The Shoe Maker’s Shoes: The Life of a Travel Company Owner on Holiday

November 30, 2023
by Ben Robbins - Director, Bespoke Kosher Travel

Being the owner of a travel company comes with its fair share of challenges and responsibilities. While I enjoy providing amazing travel experiences to my clients, I also value the importance of family time and relaxation. My children are at an age still where we have to holiday during  school vacations - however this happens to also be our busiest times of year!

Juggling both aspects during my own holidays can be demanding, but it is crucial to strike a balance between work and personal life. In this blog, I will share my experiences and insights on how I manage to enjoy my time away while ensuring my clients' needs are met and my business stays on track.

Embracing Family Time and Client Needs

As a travel company owner, my profession revolves around planning and organizing unforgettable vacations for my clients. However, when it's time for my own holiday, I face a dilemma of allocating time for my family's enjoyment and managing my clients' expectations and needs whilst enjoying theirs. It's essential to communicate openly with clients about my unavailability during specific periods, while also ensuring that someone trustworthy is handling urgent matters during my absence.

While on holiday, it's tempting to switch off completely and relax. However, I find myself working diligently to ensure that all the operations back in the travel company are running smoothly. Being hands-on allows me to resolve any unforeseen issues promptly and provide peace of mind to both my clients and the team back at the office.

Striking a Balance: The Shoemaker's Shoes

I often hear my wife affectionately refer to our holiday situation as "the shoemaker's shoes." It means that while I may be an expert in crafting remarkable travel experiences for others, I must remember to create special moments for my own family during our vacation. It's a constant challenge to be the travel guru for others while also ensuring our own holiday remains memorable and enjoyable.

Holidays are the perfect opportunities to unwind and recharge our batteries. Whether it's lounging on a pristine beach or by the pool, engaging in fun-filled activities, hiking through breath-taking landscapes, or exploring historical sites, the options are endless. Each individual or family has their preferences, and for me, finding a place where I can switch off and relax with my loved ones is a top priority.

The Joy of Kosher Travel

One aspect that brings me immense joy during my holidays is experiencing Kosher food and meeting the people I work with in my Kosher travel company. Food plays a vital role in any culture, and Kosher food has its unique traditions and flavours. Combining this culinary delight with the pleasure of meeting partners and colleagues in person, adds an extra layer of satisfaction to my holiday experiences.

Embrace the Reasons for Travel

Personally, I have come to learn that people embark on journeys for various reasons. Whether it's for leisure, exploration, adventure, or business, every travel experience holds its significance. I encourage my clients, as well as myself, to savor and embrace the reasons for travel. By doing so, we can fully immerse ourselves in the cultures, activities, and moments that make each trip special.

So as a sit here, my cocktail in one hand, and my phone in the other, I reflect that every holiday comes with its share of challenges, but it's also a rewarding experience. Juggling between family time and clients' needs can be demanding, but with open communication and careful planning, it is possible to strike a balance. Embracing relaxation while ensuring the business remains under control is essential for a fulfilling holiday experience. Remembering the shoemaker's shoes adage, we can create cherished memories for our own families while providing amazing experiences to others.

So whatever reason you have to travel, whilst working or not, remember we can create life-long memories here at Bespoke Kosher Travel.  The beaches of Thailand, the history in Mexico, or the European mountains, wherever you go, whenever you go; don't miss out on creating memories that will last a lifetime.
