Here’s a short synopsis of my 2-3 years roller coaster ride as the leader of a small, but mighty team of NYC permit consultants!
We struggled immensely from a strategy point of view, both in sales and marketing, as well as hiring the right staff, implementing the right task & project management software, and collections. As the leader, I had a LOT on my plate and I needed to figure out what to do first and how to do it! We hired quality consultants and coaches to assist with all the above and saw lots of positive improvement. During this 2-3 year period, I gained a much better understanding of what type of employees were or were not a good fit for our team and we laid off those who weren’t. It was a lot of trial and error, but we’ve fine-tuned the process and I’m very happy with where we are at this point BH!
It wasn’t until I enrolled in a comprehensive leadership training course that things really changed! Meaning; that I was now improving myself, and not just working on the business per se!
Case in point; I was in the midst of renegotiating a deal with one of our largest, but most complex clients, and things were very difficult. In my opinion the guy, Abe, was being extremely inflexible, and whatever I suggested, he was not happy with and communication was coming to screeching halt. At the time, I had a 3-day seminar as part of our leadership training course, and I told myself that I would continue the communication upon my return to the office.
The seminar completely changed my mindset on communicating with clients, and to get into the specifics would be way beyond the scope of this bio, but suffice it to say that my new attitude was to show the client how much I cared about them and how much I wanted them to feel that care! The success of my new mindset was evident when we continued the conversation the following week and I mentioned to Abe that I had been at this amazing business leadership training, and as the leader of a large business I invited him to join me at the next one. To which Abe responded by saying, “Zevy, I can tell from the way you’re talking that something is different—in a positive way! I see that these seminars can really help. Keep it up! As for me, I’m not the type that can sit through these things and listen to ‘the expert’! You gotta understand that I was expelled from school at the age of 14 and have been in business ever since, so I’m not “going back to school” now at the age of 30!”
That conversation and other proof is what planted the seed in my mind that I want to bring this type of training to many other high achievers in our community, and that, my friend, is why I decided to launch JSuccess!
